Moderation in Pursuit of Prosperity

I recently came across someone who was proudly proclaiming himself to be a “moderate”. He went on and on about the extremists on either side. He thought the correct answer should be somewhere in the middle. He appears to be the type of guy who would suggest you split a restaurant bill proportionally, even though he got the prime rib and you got the hamburger. In fact, taking a strong position on almost anything was a foreign concept to him. He believes there is always room for compromise.

I wonder about people like him. If someone were to break into his home and try to kidnap his children, would this “moderate” seek to negotiate with his attacker to only take one of his children? I would hope that there was still enough of a man inside that shell to answer a resounding “NO!”, then beat the intruders into submission or chase them off, or possibly perforate them, with the handgun the constitution guarantees us the right to possess.
